The Tioga County Sheriff’s Office in Owego has launched a new drone program aimed at enhancing field operations.

Equipped with a Trimble 3D Scanner, the drone is designed to fly over accident or crime scenes, providing valuable data for investigations. Deputy Darion Wiant, one of the office’s two FAA Certified Drone Pilots, highlighted the program’s ability to streamline data collection, eliminating the need to rely on external agencies.

Beyond aiding in investigations, the drone will play a crucial role in search and rescue operations, covering large areas efficiently from overhead. To further bolster its capabilities, the office plans to acquire additional drones equipped with night vision and infrared cameras, particularly useful for search and rescue scenarios.

Aside from operational use, the sheriff’s office intends to leverage the drones for public relations and community events, showcasing their technological advancements and commitment to safety.
