ROME, N.Y. — Oneida County has been granted $23.6 million to develop a state-of-the-art semiconductor supply chain campus on a 332-acre parcel of land at Griffiss International Airport in Rome.

The proposed site, known as the triangle site, will serve as a hub for manufacturing, warehousing, and service operations, providing a base for global companies and serving as their headquarters, according to Christian Mercurio, Vice President of Planning and Development for Mohawk Valley Edge.

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the vulnerability of global supply chains, making it evident that a local solution was needed. Mercurio emphasized the importance of reducing reliance on overseas manufacturing and supply from countries with delicate geopolitical situations.

New York State has taken steps to address this issue by promoting the construction of the semiconductor supply chain campus in upstate New York. The grant, combined with county funding, will be used to make the site “shovel ready” by providing necessary infrastructure such as sewer and water connections, electrical systems, and roadway improvements, explained Anthony Picente of Mohawk Valley Edge.

The location of the campus at Griffiss Air Force Base brings additional advantages, including access to a general aviation runway that facilitates the transportation of products for suppliers.

Groundbreaking is expected to commence as soon as possible, and the project has garnered significant support from various partners, according to Mercurio.

Once completed, the semiconductor supply chain campus at Griffiss International Airport is expected to be the largest shovel-ready site in the state, potentially generating approximately 3,000 employment opportunities.
